Liam Crowley, Pinergy Orwell Wheelers, takes his second win in a row in the 2026 Mondello Series.
Liam Crowley, Pinergy Orwell Wheelers, secured victory in the latest round of the Mondello Series, held at Mondello Park in County Kildare under the sponsorship of Thorntons Recycling.
Ideal conditions prevailed aside from a strong wind that affected the main straight and much of the 3.62 km circuit. A large group of Cat 3 riders set off first, followed by substantial gaps to the Cat 2 and Cat 1 groups, maximising the handicap.
Shane Donohue, Athy Athy Wheelers Cycling Club, claimed the prime on lap three. Mark Kiernan, Kilcullen CC Murphy Geospacial, later led out and won the subsequent prime in a two-up sprint.
By this stage the groups had largely come together, and shortly afterwards the Cat 1 riders caught the Cat 2 and 3 riders. The strong wind then caused the race to fragment, with riders quickly losing contact for even minor mistakes.
Groups formed and reformed until a break of nine riders established itself, pursued by a mixed chasing group from the remnants of the bunch.
Liam Crowley briefly opened what appeared to be a significant gap but was brought back by the chasing eight as the race entered the final three laps. The leading nine remained intact for the sprint finish.
Callaly has showed excellent form of late having won the Moynalty GP a few weeks ago followed up by a second recent success in the Brendan and Kitty Memorialin Donore, County Meath, last Sunday 26th July. Not to be tonight though as fast man Crowley had too much for him in the sprint for the line. Javan Nulty (unattached Leinster) came in third.
Eugene Murtagh, Lucan CRC, finished fourth, junior Tom Hughes, Kilcullen CC, took fifth, and Marcin Mizgajski, Spin the Bean Power by Coffee, placed sixth on his Mondello debut.
How things stand
Crowley takes a commanding lead into the final 2 rounds with a 10-point advantage over Javan Nulty. The unattached Leinster rider would have to win the final two races and hope Crowley failed to pick up any further points to claim the 2026 series…
