Daire Feeley takes Connacht title and Sean Stagg Shield in Hollymount.
Daire Feeley, Burren Cycling Club, claimed the 2026 Connacht Road Race Championship and the Sean Stagg Shield after winning a tight two-up sprint in Hollymount, Co. Mayo.
The racing was hosted by Hollymount Wheelers Cycling. The Shield was first presented in 2016 to recognise Sean Stagg‘s contribution to cycling in the region.
Around 40 riders started the 85km race, which consisted of three laps of a 28.4km circuit through the rolling south Mayo countryside. No major climbs to contend with but nonetheless an undulating course.
The bunch stayed together for the opening lap. On the second circuit the pace lifted, the field strung out, and a group of about ten riders eventually went clear.
From that move Feeley and Bren Broekaart, Tuam Cycling Club, escaped. In the two-up sprint the Roscommon rider proved strongest, crossing the line a bike length clear of the Tuam man to take the win.
Frank Barrett, The Aura Cycling Team, finished third.
The result marks Feeley’s seventh victory of an exceptional season that sees him finish as the number 1 Irish rider for 2026. The 2022 Rás Tailteann winner continues to bring his winning mentality in every race he contests.
